Building Skills & Confidence

A successful case study

CM has anxiety and depression. She is being supported by the Stepping Stones Project who support vulnerable people at risk of homelessness. CM is in supported living accommodation in Burnley. She is also long term unemployed. CM needed support to get into volunteering and to build her skills and confidence.

BPRCVS met with CM to discuss the different types of volunteering roles. She has a BTEC in Performing Arts and would like to eventually become a dance teacher. She is considering going to University next September.

We informed her about a couple of roles where she may be able to use her skills and teach dance on a voluntary basis. She was really keen to do this.

We took her to Burnley Play Association and Participation Works to discuss with them how she may be able to use her skills with their young people.

Both organisations were keen to take her on. She started volunteering at Burnley Play Association on 9th August and with Participation Works on 13th August. Both organisations said she was fitting in really well. This helped her with her depression as she was doing something she loved. It also gave her something to focus on and help to build her confidence.

CM applied for a job at Palazzo Italian Restaurant in Burnley town centre and got offered a part-time job with them. She now works evenings washing up and helping in the kitchen as a kitchen assistant.

BPRCVS also discussed different training opportunities with her. CM mentioned that she might be interested in doing a First Aid Course. We found a course running at Colne Open Door which CM was going to consider.

Support was offered to assist with the creation of a CV and help to find jobs, but CM didn’t need help or support with her CV or job searching.

CM said of the programme, “Janette was very helpful and supportive and helped me to access volunteering opportunities. This helped me to build up my confidence.”
